New memorial commemorates 9-11 victims

WOODBRIDGE, Va. – It’s a sobering reminder of what happened nearly 12 years ago. On Wednesday, Prince William County will unveil and dedicate a new Sept. 11 memorial, the World Trade Center Monument.

The new monument sits on a patch of grass between the Prince William County 9-11 Liberty Memorial and the county government complex.

The monument is made of four steel beams pulled from the wreckage in New York. They stand as a testament and a tribute to all of those who lost their lives in New York on that dark day, including three Prince William County residents. The coldness and ugliness of the beams are stark reminders of the evil that happened on that day.

Three of the beams are standing upright and tied at the top, with the fourth beam standing off to the side. The beams range in height from about 18-feet to 23-feet, weighing a total of 60,000 pounds.

On Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m., a memorial service will be held and the new World Trade Center Monument will be dedicated. The dedication event took longer to organize than originally expected. Budget complications meant the beams sat in storage for several years.

Though the beams are put into place, the monument isn’t finished yet. Once completed, you will be able to walk under the beams and touch the monument.

The public is invited to attend the dedication event, which is at the Sean Cannaughton Plaza, 1 County Complex Court in Woodbridge, Va.
