WASHINGTON – Metrorail is advising travelers to pack their patience and expect large crowds Wednesday evening due to a rally, a Nationals game, Wizards game and cherry blossom tourism.
A major rally, concluding at 6 p.m., is expected to draw 30,000 people to the U.S. Capitol, according to a Metro news release. Most participants will use Stadium-Armory and Capitol South stations, with overflow crowds expected at Federal Center SW and Easter Market stations, the release says.
The Washington Nationals are hosting the Chicago White Sox for a 7 p.m. start time, which will increase ridership to Navy Yard and downtown transfer stations L’Enfant Plaza and Gallery Place.
The Wizards are also at home this evening and will draw fans to Gallery Place/Chinatown.
The cherry blossoms are in full peak and the warm temperatures Wednesday will likely lure thousands to the Tidal Basin.
Stations to avoid if possible:
- Capitol South (use Eastern Market or Federal Center SW)
- Stadium-Armory (use Potomac Ave.)
- L’Enfant Plaza
- Smithsonian (use Arlington Cemetery or Federal Triangle)
Metro plans to run eight-car trains during the evening rush hour, prior to the rally and add extra trains between Mount Vernon Square and Anacostia on the Green Line during rush hour to accommodate baseball fans, the release says.
