WASHINGTON – Yes, yes, yes. Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc. are just days away, but some people like to eschew tradition and do things a little differently around the holidays. So this weekend, if the thought of Christmas trees and menorahs is getting to be a little too much, check out these secular activities around the region.
Kids will enjoy Pajama Storytime in Arlington Friday night. From 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hooray for Books in Alexandria, children of all ages can cozy up and listen to their favorite tales. RSVP is required, so please call 703-548-4092 if you and yours wish to attend.
Once the little ones are tucked away, parents can head to the Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse Friday or Saturday night, when “The Tonight Show” writer and comedian Dean Cole takes the stage. Cole has also been featured on Comedy Central’s “Laffapalooza,” HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam,” BET’s “Comic View” and NBC’s “Showtime at the Apollo,” among many others. Tickets are $24 and the show starts at 10 p.m. Prepare to be offended, in the funniest way possible.
Busboys and Poets in Hyattsville is hosting a beer tasting for those who prefer to get their drink on when the holidays arrive. Jeremy Cowan, author of “Craft Beer Bar Mitzvah,” will read from his book and answer everything you want to know about beer, brewing and booze, in general. More information at 301-779-2787.
For those with food on the brain, D.C. native and restaurateur Aaron Silverman will offer a pop-up dinner at Tippy’s Taco House in Rockville Saturday. The $30-menu includes popcorn soup, caramelized cauliflower yogurt, “better-than-your-favorite-cornbread” cornbread, chicken and waffles, among other offerings. And opening at the Kennedy Center Saturday night is “Ann”, featuring Emmy Award-winning stage and screen actress Holland Taylor (“Two and a Half Men”). She stars in the “hilarious” and “inspiring” story based on the life of Ann Richards, former governor of Texas. Run-time is approximately two hours, and tickets start at $54. If you feel like braving the cold, stop by the Antiques and Collectibles Market in Arlington on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or the Georgetown Flea Market Sunday from 8 p.m. to 4 p.m. Both feature one-of-a-kind items to make holiday shopping a little more unique.
