Falls Church man wins $1 million in Powerball

Thursday - 3/8/2012, 5:59pm  ET

WASHINGTON - The second time was the charm for a local man who is now $1 million richer.

John Vancea, from Falls Church, bought a ticket at Sleepy Hollow Exxon on Arlington Boulevard. His ticket matched the first five numbers in the March 3 drawing.

The winning numbers were 29-30-45-47-49 and the Powerball number 35. He used Easy Pick and allowed the computer to randomly select his numbers.

On March 8, Vancea returned to the store to receive his $1 million check. The store received a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

This is the first $1 million Powerball ticket sold in Virginia since the game changed in January. The same ticket last year would have won $200,000 for matching the first five numbers.

The Virginia Lottery generates about $1.2 million per day for Virginia's K-12 public schools.
