Former Redskins owner’s granddaughter wants change

WASHINGTON (AP) — A granddaughter of the man who named the NFL’s Washington Redskins says the team should change its name.

Sixty-five-year-old Jordan Wright of Alexandria tells The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1kUxKHj ) that if just one person says they’re offended by the team’s name, then that should be reason enough to change it. The story was published Wednesday.

Wright’s grandfather, George Preston Marshall, headed a group that founded the NFL’s Boston Braves in 1932. Marshall renamed them the Boston Redskins in 1933 and moved them to Washington in 1937.

Wright says she has felt since the 1980s that the word is racist but has kept mostly quiet about it until now.

Current owner Daniel Snyder told USA Today last year that the club will never change its name.
