MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) — The head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Ebola is winning right now in West Africa but the tide can be turned.
Dr. Tom Frieden is on a visit this week to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, the three hardest hit countries.
Frieden says that while the Ebola virus that has killed more than 1,400 people in West Africa has the “upper hand” right now, experts have the tools to stop it.
The current outbreak is the largest ever and experts have struggled to contain it. The disease has overwhelmed already struggling health systems in some of the world’s poorest countries.
Frieden expresses optimism that the outbreak can be contained, but says it will require “tremendous attention to every detail.”
