WASHINGTON - If D.C. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie has his way, individuals under the age of 21 will not be able to buy or possess cigarettes and other tobacco products in the District.
"Smoking cigarettes kills more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide (and) illegal drugs combined," McDuffie said, as he introduced his bill to ban the sale of tobacco products to those under 21 years of age.
McDuffie, the Ward 5 councilmember, estimates that 17 percent of the city's high school age youth use tobacco.
His bill, co-sponsored by six other members of the 13-member council, has been referred to the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety for further consideration.
