Apple offers to replace defective iPhone 5 batteries

WASHINGTON — Apple will replace some iPhone 5 batteries that have a shorter battery life or need to be charged frequently.

Apple announced last week that a small percentage of the devices sold between September 2012 and January 2013 have the defective batteries.

IPhone 5 owners experiencing battery problems should check their serial number to determine if their phone is eligible for the battery replacement.

Owners can get a new battery by visiting an authorized provider or an Apple store. Apple is also offering refunds if customers already bought a replacement battery.

Cracked screens or other damage may need to be repaired before the battery could be replaced.

Apple has posted more information information on its website.
