San Diego to pay nearly $6M to settle lawsuit

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The city of San Diego has agreed to pay nearly $6 million to settle a federal lawsuit by a woman who says she was groped by a police officer in 2011 after being pulled over for an alleged traffic violation.

City officials announced Thursday that the woman identified only as Jane Doe would receive $5.9 million as part of the settlement of the lawsuit filed in 2012 against San Diego and former police officer Anthony Arevalos.

Arevalos was convicted in 2011 for eliciting sexual favors from women and is serving an eight-year sentence.

The settlement is the last of 13 claims tied to the case. The city had already spent $2.3 million to settle 12 of those claims.
