Steve Davis with the advocacy group Transportation for America says bridges that Americans use every day are badly in need of repair and, in some cases, replacement.

"About 66,000 total bridges across the entire country are rated by inspectors (as) structurally deficient," he says. "We spend a lot of money on transportation, potentially spending money on things that maybe aren't as high a priority as keeping our bridges open and functioning and running smoothly."

The D.C. area is not immune to deficient structures, either. Maryland ranks 40th, Virginia ranks 31st and D.C. ranks 16th nationwide when comparing deficient bridges among the states.

To find deficient bridges within 10 miles of your address, check out this Transportation for America interactive.

8:50 a.m. - Steve Davis, of the advocacy group Transportation of America

A new report by Transportation for America says many deficient bridges are around 65 years old and some are in the D.C. area.
