Casino developer seeks to calm safety fears

WASHINGTON – As two more casino proposals for Prince George’s County came in before Friday’s deadline, bringing the total to three, one developer is already seeking to soothe residents’ fears about security.

Casino opponents most often cite public safety as their prime concern. Last month, police sources told ABC7 that they would expect a new casino to draw in prostitutes and human traffickers.

But Lorenzo Creighton, of MGM Resorts International, one of the companies looking to build the casino, says that studies show crime “actually goes down” in the area around casinos.

Creighton also promised “a world class security force – world-class surveillance and security programs.”

MGM submitted a proposal earlier this week for a casino in National Harbor. On Friday, Penn National Gaming submitted a proposal for a casino at Rosecroft Raceway, and Greenwood Racing wants to put a casino several miles south of National Harbor in Fort Washington.
