PRINCE GEORGE, Va. (AP) — A historic plantation in Prince George County has a new owner.
The Brandon Plantation was sold this week to a Florida family for $17.8 million.
A real estate agent involved with the sale told the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1vFDs4I) that the family plans to occupy the plantation, renovate the main house and continue farming the land.
The main plantation house needs extensive renovations to bring it up to date. Part of the home was built around 1765.
The property dates to the founding of Jamestown in 1607. The original owner of Brandon Plantation, Capt. John Martin, helped establish the first permanent English settlement in North America.
The 4,487-acre property includes a 7,773-square-foot plantation home. It had been for sale since May 2013 after an auction failed to produce a buyer.
