Digital readiness: How to prepare devices for the storm

WASHINGTON – The power goes out and the digital devices go on. But what happens when the battery life is drained?

To avoid this situation and to save a device’s power, people can dim the brightness on cellphone screens, put the phone in airplane mode and shut down unused apps.

Since frequently charging a phone is not an option, a car charger and a physical list of important phone numbers can be lifesavers. A prepaid cellphone can work as a backup in case of emergencies.

People should also charge their digital cameras or buy replacement batteries, since insurance companies will want proof of any storm damage.
