Fog results in tangle of crashes in southwest Va.

FANCY GAP, Va. (AP) — Nearly 30 vehicles were involved in 10 separate chain reaction crashes when fog enveloped a section of Interstate 77 in southwest Virginia.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the Friday afternoon mess left seven people injured. Three were treated at the scene and four went to area hospitals. None of the injuries was life-threatening.

The crashes occurred in Fancy Gap, a high-elevation section of I-77 that is subject to fog cover. Last year, a 95-vehicle pileup killed three and injured 25.

During Friday’s tangle of crashes, traffic was re-routed off the interstate.
