St. Paul’s College in Va. still seeking a buyer

LAWRENCEVILLE, Va. (AP) — The “For Sale” sign is still up at St. Paul’s College in Southside Virginia.

The agent handling the sale says several parties interested in the shuttered Lawrenceville college did not qualify for an auction, even with an extended deadline. Up for sale are the 135-acre campus and the 31 buildings on it.

St. Paul’s College President Millard “Pete” Stith says the new owner ideally would be an institute of higher learning.

The school closed last year mired in debt and after it lost its accreditation. St. Paul’s dates to 1888, when it was founded to educate young black students. It is among more than 100 historically black colleges and universities in the U.S.

A plan to house unaccompanied Central American children at St. Paul’s fell through amid local opposition.
