15 injured in 5 weekend shootings in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Norfolk Police Chief Michael Goldsmith is asking the public to help police fight gun violence after 15 people were injured in five weekend shootings.

Goldsmith tells media outlets that he’s thankful no one was killed.

One shooting occurred just before midnight Friday. The other shootings occurred Saturday.

Police spokeswoman Melinda Wray says investigators don’t believe the shootings are related.

Goldsmith says he is increasing uniformed patrols, Homeland Security officers and vice, narcotics and gang investigators in neighborhoods where the shootings occurred.

Goldsmith is asking the public to stand up against what he calls “senseless acts.”
