WASHINGTON – A nationally known Virginia taekwondo coach has been indicted for alleged inappropriate sexual contact with two minor girls.
Quyen Vinh Phan Le, 38, was indicted earlier this week on seven felony counts for incidents that occurred at the Phan University of Martial Arts and his home, both in Springfield, Va.
Police say the first victim contacted them in June 2011, and during the course of their investigation they discovered a second victim.
Detectives determined the suspect had inappropriate sexual contact with the first victim several times between May 2003 and January 2005. The victim was under 18 at the time.
Le also had inappropriate contact with the second victim in late 2008. She was also under 18.
Detectives served several search warrants in October 2011 and recovered additional evidence.
Le was USA Taekwondo’s national Coach of the Year in 2010 and has coached Olympic-level athletes.
He also volunteered as a guest instructor over two weekends for the student-run Penn State Taekwondo Club during the spring semester, says Dave La Torre, spokesman for Penn State.
An individual matching Le’s description had been listed as a coach for the Penn State Taekwondo Club but was recently removed. To see a cached version of the website, follow this link.
The site stated: “The club greatly welcomes the latest addition to the coaching staff in Spring 2012! We look forwarding (sic) to training with Master Phan in preperation (sic) for Collegiate Nationals!”
Le was indicted May 21 on four counts of indecent liberties with a minor by someone in a custodial or supervisory relationship and three counts of possession of child pornography. He was arraigned May 22.
Fairfax County Police detectives are not aware of any other victims.
