WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University officials are investigating an alleged sexual assault involving students enrolled in its secondary school.
The alleged incident involved two students from Gallaudet’s Model Secondary School for the Deaf, which provides high school education, during a school-sponsored trip to Annapolis, Md., the university says.
The secondary school is located on the Gallaudet campus and has a residential and day program.
“Anne Arundel County police are conducting an investigation and we have no additional information we can share at this time,” the school says in a statement.
The Anne Arundel County police confirm they are conducting a criminal investigation and have not characterized it in another way. They say an incident took place on a bus at 10 p.m. on Saturday.
According to a statement from Kaitlin Luna, Coordinator of Media and Public Relations at Gallaudet University students in the Model Secondary School for the Deaf attend workshops on healthy dating, appropriate conduct and sexual harrassment.
Enrollment in the program is 150 and there are 35 “student life” staff members. When students go off campus for school sponsored events, Luna writes that they are accompanied by at least two staff members who ” monitor the students and track their whereabouts”.
Luna adds the number of staff is adjusted depending on the number of students on any off campus trip.
There were no details on how many were on the trip to Annapolis, and how many staff members were present.
The incident was reported Sunday, according to NBC Washington.
