WASHINGTON, DC (April 13, 2020) – Today, WTOP News and Northwest Federal Credit Union announced a community-based partnership benefiting Feed the Fight DC that will recognize and support essential personnel working on the frontlines in response to the COVID-19 “coronavirus” pandemic. WTOP’s “Frontline Heroes” campaign, launching Monday, April 13th, will select two nominees per day beginning April 20th and award them with $100 each. In addition, for every hero selected WTOP will donate $100 to Feed the Fight, a Washington, D.C. based nonprofit supporting local restaurants, health care workers and first responders. The program is sponsored by Northwest Federal Credit Union.

“WTOP News is so grateful for the opportunity to work with Feed the Fight DC to give back to the community in any way we can. We want to extend our thanks to all essential personnel and volunteers in our region who are working on the frontlines of this pandemic,” said Julia Ziegler, Director of News and Programming at WTOP News.

Nominated by WTOP listeners, Frontline Heroes will be selected based on set criteria; nominees must be essential workers in the District of Columbia, Virginia and Maryland (DMV) area currently reporting to work in the midst of the Coronavirus crisis. Heroes could include health care workers and staff, utility workers, trash collectors, grocery store and pharmacy employees, restaurant owners and staff, mail carriers, emergency service personnel and more.

“Feed the Fight is proud to partner with WTOP News in our shared mission of creating a positive impact in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area during the COVID-19 crisis. Through the Frontline Heroes campaign, we’re working together to recognize essential workers and express gratitude for their commitment to caring for, supporting and protecting our community,” said Elena Tompkins, founder of Feed the Fight.

Every dollar donated to Feed the Fight by WTOP will go back into the community and will be used to purchase meals from local restaurants that will be delivered to health care workers, police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel in the DMV. With the help of local restaurant partners, Feed the Fight has purchased more than 10,000 meals for health care workers and first responders on the frontlines of this global health care crisis to date.
