MADRID (AP) — A high-speed train derailed in southern Spain on Sunday, jumping onto the track in the opposite direction and hitting an oncoming train, the Spanish rail operator Adif said.
Unconfirmed media reports said the accident in Córdoba caused deaths and injuries among the hundreds of passengers. Spain’s Guardia Civil said it could not yet confirm the casualties.
The evening train between Malaga and Madrid derailed and hit a train coming from Madrid to Huelva, another southern Spanish city.
The El Pais newspaper, citing unidentified Guardia Civil sources, said five people were killed and several people were injured in the collision.
