WASHINGTON — Washington Nationals’ Bryce Harper was named the National League winner of the 2015 Hank Aaron Award, the MLB announced Saturday.
Harper was the first overall pick in the 2010 draft. He hit a career-best .330, with 118 runs scored, 172 hits, 38 doubles, 42 home runs and 99 RBIs, according to MLB stats.
The right fielder became the youngest player ever to club at least 42 homers, while drawing 124 walks in a season — a perch once held by Babe Ruth, according to the MLB.
Given to the most outstanding offensive performer in each league, the Hank Aaron Award was established in 1999 to honor the 25th anniversary of Hank Arron breaking Babe Ruth’s all-time home run record. Winners are determined by fans and a panel of Hall of Famers led by Aaron.
Josh Donaldson of the Toronto Blue Jays was this year’s American League winner.
