RICHMOND, Va. — The Redskins went through a two-hour practice on Friday and will have a day off on Saturday. Head coach Jay Gruden moved the practice up two hours in order to give the team a little extra time off.
Friday involved a lot of situational work today mostly for the second and third teams. Gruden said his first teamers had a lot of work on Thursday so gave the other units more work.
“I’ve just got to make sure I’m monitoring how much reps these guys get,” Gruden said. “Making sure I keep their legs fresh, make sure they get the necessary work, and make sure the twos and threes get some work so we can see them.”
The defense got the best of the offense today, picking off third string quarterback Nate Sudfeld three times. During one point of the session, the defensive players that were watching started chanting “De-fense, De-fense” and waving to the crowd.
On the very next play rookie cornerback Lloyd Carrington picked off Sudfeld and the entire defense ran on the field to mob him — a very spirited practice for the defense overall.
Linebacker Terrence Garvin and cornerback Jeremy Harris had the other interceptions.
The Redskins got some bad news on the injury front on Friday, as rookie linebacker Steven Daniels has a torn labrum and will miss the upcoming season. He was a seventh-round pick out of Boston College this year.
“It just hurts,” Daniels said. “I’ve never been without a football season and now I don’t have a football season right now. I’ve got to take it day by day and stay learning from the older guys and just take it step by step.”
Jay Gruden didn’t specify which shoulder it is, neither would Daniels.
“It’s a shoulder. It’s one of them. I’ve got two of them, it’s one of them.”
Other injury notes:
– Wide receiver Jamison Crowder has a slight hamstring injury. Gruden sat him on Friday, giving him two days off to rest with the off day Saturday
– Trent Williams sat out a second day with a sore knee for the same reason as Crowder
– Tight end Jordan Reed sat out with a sprained thumb, but is fine
– Running back Matt Jones was back at practice after sitting out Thursday
The Redskins return for practice Sunday afternoon.
