Ovechkin, Capitals hand Oilers seventh straight loss, 5-4

Alex Ovechkin scored for a third consecutive game, Evgeny Kuznetsov had two goals and two assists and the Washington Capitals beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-4 Monday night to snap a four-game losing streak.

Capitals newcomer Dylan Strome had two goals and an assist and Erik Gustafsson added three assists for the Capitals. Charlie Lindgren had 25 saves.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored twice and Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid each had a goal and an assist for the Oilers. Stuart Skinner finished with 26 saves.

Ovechkin beat Skinner on the power play, making him the 163rd different NHL goalie he has scored against. It’s also the third game in a row he has scored on a new goalie after Detroit’s Ville Husso and Arizona’s Karel Vejmelka. It was Ovechkin’s 788th career goal, putting him 13 behind Gordie Howe for second on the career list and 106 shy of Wayne Gretzky’s record.

ISLANDERS 4, FLAMES 3, OT

NEW YORK (AP) — Noah Dobson scored a power-play 4:02 into overtime and New York won for the sixth time in seven games.

Sebastian Aho, Anders Lee and Kyle Palmieri also scored as New York came back from a 3-1 deficit in the third period. Mathew Barzal had three assists and Ilya Sorokin made 43 saves.

Mikael Backlund had two goals and Elias Lindholm also scored as Calgary lost its fifth straight game (0-3-2) — the second straight in overtime. Jacob Markstrom had 28 saves in the opener of the Flames’ three-game northeast road trip after playing eight straight at home.

BRUINS 3, BLUES 1

BOSTON (AP) — Patrice Bergeron scored a power-play goal with 7:15 remaining and Boston handed St. Louis its seventh straight loss.

Trent Frederic and Jake DeBrusk also scored for Boston, and Brad Marchand had two assists. Linus Ullmark finished with 25 saves as the Bruins improved to 7-0-0 at home and won for the eighth time in nine games overall.

Brayden Schenn scored and Jordan Binnington had 34 saves for the Blues.
