2 teens become city’s 9th and 10th homicides this year

PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) — Police in Virginia say two teenagers are dead following shootings in the city of Petersburg.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the shootings occurred Saturday evening. Two men have been arrested.

Police identified the victims as 19-year-old Nijay Hairston and 17-year-old Londre Claiborne.

Police said they have arrested 21-year-old Tariq Pope and 21-year-old Kevin Crenshaw and charged them with being principals in second degree to first-degree murder in the shooting deaths.

Police have not released details on the shootings or a possible motive.

The deaths are the ninth and 10th homicides in Petersburg this year. The city of 32,000 is south of Richmond, and it ranked first in the state last year in the number of killings per capita.
