Henrico man sentenced for stealing identity of deceased child

WASHINGTON — A Henrico man will spend four years in jail for stealing more than just money.

Shawn D. Gover, 47, stole approximately $33,000 from Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, Virginia. But while working as the director of finance for the club, he was using the name Aaron Garth Roberts, a person who was born in 1974 in Texas and died as a young child.

A news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia said that from 2016 to 2017, Gover — who had control over the golf club’s finances, including the checkbook and corporate credit card — stole $33,557 from his employer.

In 2016, Gover used Roberts’ identity to buy a gun, which he was prohibited from owning due to a felony conviction of grand theft, for which he served 16 months in prison, the release said.

Court documents say that Gover assumed Roberts’ name, Social Security number and date of birth in an attempt to hide his previous felony conviction.
