WASHINGTON — You’ve heard of painted horses — but have you heard about the painting horse?
And you’ve heard of the Horse of a Different Color — but have you heard about the horse who has an eye for color?
Meet Jacob, the St. Petersburg Florida Police Department’s crime-fighting gelding whose talents extend from the streets to the canvas.
It all started when Jacob’s trainer noticed he had a penchant for grabbing things with his mouth, St. Petersburg Police Officer Jason Hughes tells WFLA. So the officer decided to hand him a paint brush and see what happened.
Ever since, Jacob has created masterpieces. Hughes says it has helped the pair build trust and that the horse has fun.
A special horse-proof easel was even built to foster Jacob’s hobby.
“Not all horses will do it. For example, Brooklyn, the other police horse, wanted no part of it,” police department spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez tells St. Pete Patch.
On its Facebook page, the St. Petersburg Police Department says it plans to exhibit the pieces for charity once Jacob has created enough paintings.
