WASHINGTON — They say you shouldn’t rush into marriage, and one British couple has taken that advice to heart.
When George Kirby and Doreen Luckie get married in June, they’ll have taken their time deciding to make the commitment: He’ll be 103 on his wedding day; she’s 91, and they’ve been together 27 years, The Telegraph reports.
They’ve been “living in sin” in a hotel in Eastbourne owned by Kirby’s 63-year-old son, and it was pressure from their elderly children that led George to ask Doreen on Valentine’s Day “if she wanted to be married to me for a short time. …
“I didn’t get down on one knee,” Kirby added, “because I don’t think I would have been able to get back up.”
They got together in 1988, when Kirby, an RAF veteran, was 76 and had just been divorced and Luckie, who was a court typist, had been a widow for three years after 36 years of marriage. They’ve been living together since 1990.
