WASHINGTON — How does it feel to watch your son pitch his first Major League Baseball game?
Well, if the emotional ripples playing across Richard Williams face, finally breaking into a wave of tears in elation, is any indication, we’re all feeling it today.
Williams had just watched his boy Trevor Williams pitch his first game for the Pittsburgh Pirates — and they won, 4-3, over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday . Williams pitched three innings with three strikeouts, before closing the game.
One could say what happened after was just as dramatic, as Williams walked up to his wife, Jackie, and sleeping baby son in the stands, giving her a warm kiss with dad waiting excitedly in the background. Then both men embrace, leaving us to wonder how many years of practice and toil led up to this moment for both.
