Va. mother charged with leaving child home alone during road trip

WASHINGTON — A Prince William County mother was charged with felony child endangerment after police said she left her 10-year-old daughter at home alone while the mother left for an out-of-state trip.

According to police, officers were called to Fawn Hollow Lane, in Woodbridge, just before 7 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a child who was left unattended.

Police discovered the girl alone. Her mother, Delisa Marie Torres, 29, had left for a trip outside of Virginia.

The child had contacted another family member, who had contacted police.

Child Protective Services released the girl to another family member.

After obtaining an arrest warrant, officers took Torres into custody later that evening, when she returned home.

Torres is charged with felony child endangerment. She was released on a $3,000 unsecured bond.

According to the Prince William County Department of Social Services, guidelines suggest that children between the ages of 9 and 11 can be left alone safely for 1.5 hours during the day.
