WASHINGTON — The 40th annual Marine Corps Marathon takes place Oct. 25 in the nation’s capital. But on Saturday morning, runners jogged 11.03 miles for a chance to compete in the forthcoming race.
Roughly 2,200 people braved unseasonably cold weather for the Marine Corps 17.75K race, which takes runners through Prince William Forest Park in Virginia. The event gets its name — 1775 — from the year the Marine Corps was founded.
This year’s race sold out in about seven minutes; last year’s sold out in nine minutes.
With a time of 1:09:05, Jimmy Sosinski — 32, of Haymarket — was the first to finish Saturday’s race. That was two minutes ahead of the rest. It was Sosinski’s first time running the race.
