WASHINGTON — Crews are working Tuesday morning to repair a Prince George’s County water main break that caused damage to four houses and has left many without water service.
A 10-inch main broke in the Berwyn Heights area Monday afternoon. The break occurred near Cunningham Drive and Osage Street and Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission shut off water.
The water main break caused flooding and damage to four houses in the area and water was shut off to at least 20 houses, says Michael McCormick with WSSC.
“Water washed out the roadway and flooded a couple homes,” McCormick said. The homes affected saw 6 to 8 inches of water in their basements, he adds.
“Some of the kids in the neighborhood noticed that there was a lot of water coming out off the street,” said Robin Webster of Berwyn Heights.
Webster came outside and pulled out her iPhone to record the rising water. Her yard was flooded and Cunningham Drive had become a river.
“We are underwater, oh my,” Webster is heard saying in the video as she goes through the rising water.
Webster says this is the first water main break in the neighborhood during her time living in the area, but this isn’t the first flood she has seen. In the past, she says they dealt with a sewage line break that sent waste flowing down the street.
WSSC crews are continuing work through Tuesday morning. There’s no word yet as to when water will return to the area.
