It’s curtains for Carly: backdrop falls on presidential candidate during conference

WASHINGTON– Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina had close call with a set of curtains on Sunday as she answered questions at a conference for women entrepreneurs in San Antonio, Texas.

The curtains began to tremble, and with an audible rumble, started to come down. The two women behind Fiorina on stage moved to steady the backdrop while members of the audience screamed.

Once the women realized the curtains were coming down no matter what, they formed a protective circle around the candidate. The majority of the curtain set fell past the women into the front rows of the audience.

The former Hewlett-Packard CEO did have a bit of a close shave with a renegade pole that fell close enough to her for a cameraman to jump on stage to grab it.

Regaining composure, Fiorina looked out into the audience. “Thank you, ladies,” the candidate said, as the audience clapped and cheered. Turning to her companions on stage, Fiorina thanked them for being her “guardian angels.”

Texas Tribune reporter Patrick Svitek reported on Twitter that someone in the audience shouted “Trump” as the stage was rearranged. Fiorina quipped back, “Trump, Hillary, it could’ve been lots of people.”

Apparently unshaken, Fiorina continued to take questions and move forward with the conference.

Anna Epstein, Fiorina’s press secretary, told CBS News that Fiorina was not injured in the incident.
