On a per-share basis, the Richmond, Virginia-based company said it had profit of 37 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs and to account for discontinued operations, came to 79 cents per share.
The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 73 cents per share.
The energy company posted revenue of $4.48 billion in the period, which also topped Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $4.06 billion.
Dominion Energy expects full-year earnings in the range of $3.45 to $3.69 per share.
