Maryland regulators took a major step Thursday toward getting the state’s nascent sports betting industry off the ground with the approval of sports wagering licenses for five casinos.
The Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) gave the green light to applications from Baltimore’s Horseshoe Casino, Live Casino & Hotel in Hanover, MGM National Harbor in Prince George’s County, Hollywood Casino in Perryville and Ocean Downs Casino on the Eastern Shore.
The five licenses are the first to be awarded to operators interested in hosting sportsbooks in Maryland. The state legislature voted earlier this year to allow sports betting at casinos, as well as race tracks, sports stadiums and other facilities like bingo halls, after voters passed a referendum in favor of sports wagering by a two-to-one margin in 2020.
The casinos are part of a group of 17 entities named in the legislation as Class A operators, which were given the first opportunity to apply for sports wagering licenses.…
