How public broadcasting is expanding its universe from here in Washington

Greater Washington is the center of the public broadcasting universe.

Public Broadcasting Service, National Public Radio and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting are all based here, working with local TV and radio stations from coast to coast. And of course, we have some of those as well, including WETA’s TV and radio stations, WAMU from American University and WHUT out of Howard University.

And they’re all somewhat connected. The CPB is funded by the federal government, and distributes that funding through grants to public media organizations around the country, including NPR, PBS, WETA, WAMU and WHUT. NPR also broadcasts over its member station WAMU in D.C., and PBS broadcasts over WETA’s TV station.
