Bloomberg Philanthropies pledges $2.5 million for IT youth apprenticeships in D.C.

Michael Bloomberg’s philanthropy group is giving $2.5 million to CityWorks D.C., which supports the academic and career trajectories of D.C. youth and boosts career preparation, training and apprenticeships.

The grant comes with a wave of giving by Bloomberg Philanthropies totaling $25 million in nine cities and two states designed to offset setbacks in education and workforce development from the coronavirus pandemic, the company said in a statement Tuesday.

This funding will help set up apprentice-style programs at businesses and workforce training programs at high schools and other providers.

CityWorks, which is part of the CityBridge Education nonprofit, launched its CareerWise D.C. program in fall 2020 as a three-year youth apprenticeship for D.C. high schoolers, focusing on high-wage occupations with lots of demand, including industries such as information technology, financial services and business operations.
