Lidl aims to spread out into rest of former Shoppers in Fairfax County retail center

Discount grocery chain Lidl is taking more space in a Burke shopping center, nearly a year after it opened its doors as a replacement for Shoppers there.

But the move may not translate to more shopping area for the grocer in the 235,000-square-foot Rolling Valley retail center by Old Keene Mill Road and Shiplett Boulevard in Fairfax County.

Plans obtained by Construction Journal detail improvements that include “a ‘mock’ sales floor, office area and storage space,” per the plans. “This space will serve as a sort of showroom for Lidl FM.” Lidl was awarded interior alteration permits in early October to build out about 21,800 square feet at 9276 Old Keene Mill Road, according to Fairfax County permit data.

Representatives for Lidl could not be reached for comment.

The grocer initially planned to sublease that space to other tenants as part of its larger, nearly 49,300-square-foot lease at the center, according to a spokesperson for Rolling Valley owner Combined Properties. That’s a…
