Without workers heading into the office for the last year and a half, many business improvement districts found themselves in a jam. But Tracy Sayegh Gabriel says National Landing isn’t like most BIDs.
The home of Amazon.com Inc.’s second headquarters has felt some of the same pressures other office-laden urban environments have coped with during the pandemic, but the newly expanded — and renamed — BID hasn’t let that slow its ambitious growth plans. In fact, Gabriel has led a hiring surge for the organization in the last year, growing the BID from four full-time staffers up to 11 with 2020 revenue of $4.79 million.
Those extra hands mean the BID can take on a more ambitious role in the community, Gabriel says. As an urban planner by training, and the former associate director of D.C.’s planning office, she’s sought to surround herself with “a lot of planning and transportation expertise” and build the BID’s capacity to shape the neighborhood’s evolution.
