Honoree: Julie Bowen

As chief legal officer and senior vice president of operations of The Mitre Corp., Julie Bowen has had a front row seat — and a key role — in creating scientific solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems.

With Covid-19 being perhaps the most obvious problem of all, Mitre, which operates federally funded research and development sites, was able to create coalitions of industry leaders that were willing to collaborate without profiting from the work.

Together, these organizations — including the Mayo Clinic, Microsoft Corp. and Uber — delivered 675,000 masks to front-line workers, figured out how to decontaminate used N95 masks, tested and distributed convalescent plasma, created the first at-home Covid test and created a “social integrity platform” tool to help leaders combat both mis- and disinformation.

Other thorny problems are a bit more complicated to talk about, even the work she says she’s most proud of. “A lot of that is classified,” she says.…
