Catherine Buell has worn an array of hats in her career, at times stacking them like in Tetris, all at once.
Before she took on her current role as Amazon.com Inc.’s head of community development in June 2020, Buell chaired the D.C. Historic Preservation Review Board, practiced law, oversaw policy and programs for the Greater Washington Partnership, and served as president and CEO of the Atlanta Housing Authority.
Buell’s early career started in retail, at the JoAnn Fabrics in her hometown of Silver Spring. Then came her foray into community development work the summer after her freshman year at Spelman College, a historically Black liberal arts college for women based in Atlanta. She interned with the Department of Housing and Urban Development, where her mother worked for 40 years.
