‘Economic development jewel’ or ‘climate bomb’? Proposed indoor ski slope nears crunch time.

In skiing terms, Alpine-X LLC’s work to bring a $200 million indoor snow sports facility to Fairfax County has been the equivalent of a run down a green circle or a blue square. The next few months will be more like a black diamond.

That’s because the company is nearing a crucial inflection point for its Fairfax Peak proposal, which would involve the construction of a 450,000-square-foot ski facility, a new hotel and restaurants, a “mountain coaster” and more on the site of the old Lorton landfill. After roughly four years of negotiations with local leaders over building on the 489-acre, county-owned site, Alpine-X is on the cusp of submitting set of designs for consideration via Fairfax’s entitlement process: essentially, where the proposal will go from broad ideas to concrete details.
