Bon Appetit Wants You to Try ‘Hand Salad’

There’s a new salad craze in town — or at least Bon Appetit tried to make one happen. Instead, the effort sparked a swath of jokes on social media.

The magazine posted a recipe on its website called the “Hand Salad With Yogurt-Lemon Dressing” with a short introduction attempting to justify the moniker. “We call this a hand salad because lettuce and dip just doesn’t sound like nearly as much fun.”

“Romaine hearts are great because they’re sturdy and stocked at most markets,” it continues. “Don’t use something floppy like Boston lettuce or arugula, though. This is the appetizer for the $50 dinner party.”

Bon Appetit tweeted the recipe Monday evening, sparking outcry and mockery.

@bonappetit We call that leaves & sauce where I’m from.

@bonappetit so…salad….but for the two year old in us that wants to have a temper tantrum over utensils?

The magazine’s Twitter account, which typically dabbles in puns and general silliness, ultimately got in on the fun and retweeted a tweet from a staff member on “notable hand salads through history.”

This isn’t the first time a hand salad recipe has come from Bon Appetit, according to a post on Epicurious from May 2016.

But will it be the last attempt by Bon Appetit to dress up what is essentially just lettuce leaves dipped in dressing, as some critics have observed? Only time, and tweets, will tell.
