If you’re a prospective international student considering colleges in Canada, you’re not alone.

In 2015, there were 263,855 international students pursing postsecondary education in Canada, according to the Institute of International Education’s Project Atlas.The Canadian government wants to increase that number in the coming years, according to plans announced in 2014.

These are the top 10 Best Global Universities in Canada, ranked by U.S. News based on their academic reputation and research performance.

10. University of Victoria

The University of Victoria was established in 1963. However, the school traces its roots back to 1903 when the school’s predecessor, Victoria College, was founded.

The university has 12 main academic divisions, offering studies in a variety of fields including business, engineering, fine arts and medical sciences, according to its website.

9. University of Waterloo

The University of Waterloo was founded in 1957 and, according to its website, initially enrolled 74 students. Today, the university has more than 30,000 students.

The university says on its website that it has the world’s largest postsecondary co-op program. The program allows students to gain paid work experience as part of their studies in a variety of subjects.

8. University of Ottawa

The University of Ottawa is a bilingual university, offering studies in both English and French.

In a recent year, more than 41,000 students attended the university, and about 85 percent were undergraduates, per data from the school’s website.

7. University of Calgary

The University of Calgary was founded in 1966 and has five campuses — four in Calgary, Alberta, and one in Doha, Qatar.

The university’s main campus spans more than 490 acres, making it larger than Calgary’s entire downtown area, according to the university’s website.

6. University of Montreal

The University of Montreal was founded in 1878, and the primary language of instruction is French.

In a recent year, the university enrolled more than 9,000 international students, according to its website. The bulk of these students — 68 percent — hailed from Europe, followed by 17 percent from Africa and 8 percent from Asia and the Middle East.

5. University of Alberta

In a recent year, the University of Alberta enrolled more than 37,000 students, according to the university’s website. The same year, more than 20 percent of the total student body was international, with students hailing from 143 countries.

Throughout its history, according to the school, more than 70 Rhodes scholars have been affiliated with the university.

4. McMaster University

McMaster University was founded in 1887 in Toronto, but today is located in Hamilton, Ontario.

Full-time faculty members at the university hail from 57 countries, not including Canada, according to the institution’s website.

3. McGill University

McGill University was founded in 1821, making it Montreal’s oldest university, according to the school’s website.

One notable McGill alum is James Naismith, who graduated in 1887 and invented basketball.

2. University of British Columbia

The University of British Columbia has two main campuses, the larger of which is located in Vancouver, British Columbia.

According to the school’s website, the university has been associated with a total of seven Nobel Prize winners in the fields of chemistry, economic sciences, physics, and physiology or medicine.

1. University of Toronto

The University of Toronto, founded in 1827, offers more than 700 undergraduate programs and around 280 master’s and doctoral programs, as stated on its website.

The university is also home to one of the biggest libraries in North America, according to its website, with more than 19.3 million physical holdings.
