McDonald’s Corp. (ticker: MCD) is making healthy McChanges faster than planned to certain menu items, reports Chicago Tribune. But will this be enough to make up for its lackluster earnings report?
The company’s latest changes — taking out artificial preservatives from chicken nuggets and pork sausage patties and taking high-fructose corn syrup out of its buns by the end of August — are geared at pleasing consumers, says Mike Andres, president of McDonald’s USA.
The changes also include removing artificial preservatives from pre-scrambled eggs and other menu items. The company is also giving customers antibiotic-free chicken; Andres says McDonald’s met its goal regarding antibiotic removal a year in advance.
McDonald’s, like many of its food industry peers, is increasing efforts to please health-conscious consumers. It’s also tried appealing to a wider range of consumers with its push into breakfast, including an expansion of its breakfast menu.
It’s been a topsy-turvy time the last few years for MCD stock, which fell 7 percent from April 2013 to September 2015, then surged 17 percent in a matter of weeks as the company announced its popular all-day breakfast offerings.
Now, however, the drama continues. After disappointing U.S. sales, the company’s stock dipped 3 percent last Tuesday, reports CNBC, pushing MCD to nearly flat for the year.
It’s unclear at this point if this latest faster healthy push will yield higher returns for investors, nor if it will matter to the company’s larger consumer base that may not pay attention to these changes.
