U.S. News will publish data on more than 21,500 public high schools when we release our 2016 Best High Schools rankings on April 19.
U.S. News ranks high schools both nationally and by state to show how well schools are preparing students for college and careers.
U.S. News will award gold, silver and bronze medals to more than 6,000 schools based on our methodology, which incorporates performance on state proficiency tests, participation in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate examinations and other data.
RTI International, one of the world’s leading research institutes, worked with U.S. News to implement the comprehensive rankings methodology, which reflects how well high schools serve all of their students, not just those who are planning to go to college.
In addition to the main national rankings, U.S. News will release new numerical rankings for the top high schools in each state, as well as the Best High Schools for STEM, Best Charter Schools and Best Magnet Schools on a national level.
The rankings, which will only be published online, include an analysis of detailed statistical information from the 2013-2014 school year. Data for schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia were evaluated. The rankings include school-specific data on enrollment, diversity, participation in free and reduced-price lunch programs, and the results of state assessments and AP and IB tests.
A detailed Best High Schools methodology will be published when the rankings are released later this month.
