TRIANGLE, Va. — With the 95 Express Lanes expected to open in mid-December,
toll lane operator Transurban gave WTOP a tour of the new stretch between
Stafford and Prince William counties in Virginia.
Nine miles of new lanes will offer a toll lane connection that has not existed
before. The 95 Express Lanes begin at Garrisonville Road and run through
Edsall Road in Alexandria, Virginia.
In the southern portion, the entrance near Garrisonville Road is much
different from the confusing entrances of the 495 Express Lanes when they
opened. The entrance shoots out from the left lane, much like the entrances to
rest stops in Maryland or Delaware that are in the middle of the interstate.
Heading north, there are no toll gantries, because the first exit is not until
Dumfries Road.
If you plan to use the 95 Express Lanes, you’ll want to check out the Transurban website to know
exactly where you can enter and exit on your commute.
The process of getting between the main lanes and the Express Lanes will be
the same as on the HOV Lanes today, with retractable gates. However, the exits
will be flyover ramps that will connect you back to the main lanes near the
location you want to get off at.
Take a look at WTOP’s video to see what to expect on the opening date:
