WASHINGTON — A video of police pulling drivers over for minor traffic violations is warming hearts.
But it’s not broken taillights that are making people misty eyed. Police in Lowell, Michigan, are pulling people over, then asking them about their holiday shopping. While the officer and driver talk, a team quickly purchases presents and rushes them to the officers at the traffic stop. It was part of the #upliftsomeone campaign.
One woman receives an electric scooter. Another gets a TV. One man snags some gift cards; another gets an XBox.
When she sees the gifts, one woman asks, “Was I really getting pulled over?”
The officer response, “Yeah, you got pulled over. You got illegal tinted windows.”
In the end, she doesn’t get a ticket. Not this time at least.
At the end of the video a message reads, “While we don’t encourage minor traffic violations, it’s important for police departments to take the time to show their citizens just how much they care.”
WZZM13 reports the Lowell Police Department spent about $7,000 on 30 gifts for those they pulled over. The priciest of the presents was a laptop, while one person simply requested a curling iron.
