WASHINGTON — Police have arrested a man in connection with a series of burglaries in Alexandria.
Alexandria police arrested 20-year-old Desmond Maxey of Maryland Wednesday. Detectives say Maxey — who goes by “Fat Nasty” — is responsible for at least three of the residential burglaries in the area.
Maxey is accused of burglarizing a home in the 4000 block of Taney Avenue on Nov. 20, in the 3800 block of Taft Avenue on Nov. 21 and in the 600 block of Putnam Place on a Dec. 4.
ABC7 reports that Maxey is accused of stealing Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and jewelry from the homes.
Betty Maag said her home was burglarized and ice cream she had in the freezer was stolen. Detectives told ABC7 they got great fingerprints off of a window and the freezer.
Maxey was charged with three counts of larceny with the intent to distribute and three counts of burglary. More charges could be filed and the investigation continues, police say.
Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to call Alexandria police at 703-746-6191.
Crystal Nosal, spokeswoman for the Alexandria Police Department, tells ABC7 that burglars take advantage of the holiday season because people are frequently away from their homes, shopping or visiting loved ones.
“Burglars are going to go for what they determine is an easy target,” Nosal says. “If they feel they are getting valuable items out of one neighborhood, they may hit more than one house.”
She suggests locking doors with good-quality deadbolts and keeping homes well lit.
“Make sure there isn’t anything preventing a good sight line to the front of your house,” Nosal continues. “If you live in a place with a lot of landscaping, trim some of it back, because you want other people in your neighborhood to see this suspect if they are breaking into your house.”
