WASHINGTON — It’s hard to imagine that holiday traffic around area
shopping malls could be worse. But VDOT is working behind the scenes to make
things a little better.
From Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day VDOT puts in place its annual holiday
traffic signal timing pattern in an effort to help keep traffic moving along.
It studies data from previous years and based on that information makes the
timing changes. Also, VDOT engineers will be monitoring traffic cameras and
using real time information to make adjustments.
VDOT is adjusting the timing of traffic lights at 16 major shopping centers in
Northern Virginia which include more than 200 intersections. Of course major
shopping malls like Tysons, Springfield and Potomac Mills are on the list.
