WASHINGTON — There’s a new development in the investigation into Vince Gray’s 2010 campaign for mayor of the District.
The Washington Post reports federal prosecutors in September offered Gray a plea deal in the nearly four-year investigation, and he turned it down. Gray would have had to plead guilty to one felony count.
Gray’s attorney told prosecutors that he wouldn’t accept any plea that required him to plead guilty to anything, the Post says.
“What would I plead to?,” Gray told the Post. “I don’t know how to put it any other way than that.”
A person with knowledge of the talks tells the Post that prosecutors have since re-interviewed key witnesses — an indication they’re moving closer to an indictment.
Six people have pleaded guilty to federal crimes related to Gray’s mayoral campaign since 2012, including Jeffrey Thompson, the man accused of financing a shadow campaign for Gray.
